Are you talking about an OEM stereo. Because I know you could get an aftermarket one that would either have a line-in, meaning you would have a wire plug into your headphone jack and the other end would go into the radio. Or you could buy a radio that has a dock connector, which is the best way to go. It will keep your iPod charged, and you can use the radio controls to play your music.
I have worked with FM trasmitter/modulators. I had a cheap one and hated it. Poor sound quality.

transmitter AM, FM, QPSK... are systems
they consist of an antenna system driven by
a power amplifier, driven by
a modulator, this is what determined the type of modulation AM, FM...
it is driven from the signal to be transmitted.
