Asus, a standards setter in the netbook category, continually raises the bar on competition and performance. The company’s latest ultra-affordable system presents a new hurdle for other netbooks to clear. The Asus Eee PC 1001P, which looks strikingly similar to some of its peers , is an excellent performer with a cut-rate $299 price tag.

On paper, the 1001P appears pretty standard—unimpressive, even. Its Pine Trail architecture by Intel (mainly an Atom N450 processor, coupled with integrated graphics ) follows suit with nearly every single netbook we’ve seen in 2010. The 1001P’s dimensions, weight, and lid design are identical to the Asus 1005PR , which we recently reviewed. Nevertheless, it’s a sleek and slim system, weighing 2.8 pounds and measuring 1.4x10.3x7 inches. The textured checkerboard pattern on the 1001P’s lid is repeated on the palm rests and jazzes up the system’s minimalistic aesthetic.
