As a regular cycle commuter, I can attest firsthand to the number of drivers who still haven't gotten the message — text or otherwise — about hands-free talking. I usually see these drivers, with one hand on the wheel, weaving onto the shoulder or about to make a right turn directly into me at an intersection.

Hands-free calling technology won't focus a driver back on the road, but it will put both hands on the wheel. And, by the way, hands-free talking works just as well when you're parked or pulled over as when you're driving, with two advantages: less noise and less distraction.

Drivers have several options. The most common choice is between using Bluetooth wireless networking or car telematics, where a car has calling services integrated into its audio system.

Bluetooth, a wireless-communications technology, is built into most cellphones sold over the past several years, and allows a short-range wireless connection for two-way audio. Bluetooth headsets are the most common: in-the-ear or over-the-ear microphone/speaker combos that associate or "pair" with a Bluetooth phone. You can also opt for a visor-mounted mic/speaker device that works over Bluetooth.
