The camera's body is 1.02 inches deep, which is just a tad larger than the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FS7 at 0.85 inches, but its thinner lens offers packs 8x optical zoom versus the FS1's 4x optical zoom. See the slideshow for side-by-side images.

Panasonic plans to add the thinner lens to more cameras to boost their optical zoom like the ZR1, as well as decrease depth. The ZR1 offers 12.1 megapixel captures, 2.7" LCD, 25mm wide-angle lens, and allows for 8x optical zoom while recording video, a feature which many manufactures disable.

Next is the $399.99 Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ35, which offers 18x optical zoom and a few desirable high-definition video recording options.

The camera records video in 720p30 and captures audio with stereo mics for the high-quality Dolby Digital format. Users have the option of recording video in the in Motion JPEG format or in AVCHD, which produces better quality video in smaller file sizes, though it's not as widely supported in playback software/hardware as Motion JPEG.
