As I’ve switched between many devices for testing purposes, I’ve tried to remain consistent with using the heart rate monitor to help measure my fitness, find the right pace for a run and to track my progress over time. I’ve come to rely on it – maybe too much.

Last weekend, I ran a 5-mile race back in Canton, Ohio. It was my first race in a few years, and I wasn’t expecting to get caught up in the mad rush out of the gate, even though I’ve been warned to resist the temptation to keep up.

But there I was, running at a faster pace, on a humid day, on an unexpected incline for the first mile. My heart rate started creeping up to 177… 188… and eventually 200. I started to take short deep breaths, setting off my internal panic button. Luckily, my sister, Kim, was at my side talking me through my breathing and urging me to keep at it. For the next mile, I carefully monitored my watch as it monitored me. I stayed at a steady, safe pace.
