The Memphis region is a prime target for violent storms at any time of the year. We have many storms when there are big temperature changes. Storms are common in the early spring, fall and through the summer months.
High winds in Shelby and Fayette County reached the level of a Category 2 hurricane in the July 2003 storm called "Hurricane Elvis." A derecho (a straight-line wind storm) in excess of 100 miles per hour struck between 6 and 7 am. Seventy percent of Shelby County was without power. It took up to two weeks to restore power to some homes. Temperatures reached 90 degrees, leaving many in dangerously hot conditions. Crime increased, as security systems would not operate without power.
