After John Hughes died suddenly last week, many of the TV and radio tributes to the filmmaker featured "Don't You (Forget About Me)," the famous anthem by Simple Minds featured in "The Breakfast Club."
Pop music was always an important element of Hughes' films, from "If You Were Here" by the Thompson Twins in "Sixteen Candles" to "If You Leave" by OMD in "Pretty in Pink" to Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work" in "She's Having a Baby."
Then there's "The Edge of Forever" by The Dream Academy -- the song playing as Ferris says goodbye to Sloane at the end of their "Day Off."
Ferris and Sloane kiss. Ferris runs off. The song keeps playing. Sloane calls out "I love you," he returns the sentiment, and then she says, "He's gonna marry me."
It's a sweet scene. But is he gonna marry her? The choice of song isn't so upbeat. "Edge of Forever" is a gorgeous but melancholy piece of pop, with lyrics that speak of uncertainty and loneliness . . .
