I just bought a new Sony mini stereo model #mhc-ec70, i hooked up the speakers according to the directions in?
IF you are CERTAIN about your connections, then perhaps the SETTINGS are wrong, such as it may be set to LINE IN, or if it has recording LOOPS, perhaps it is set to some function like that? Read manual thoroughly, to check for these possibilities.
How do you "know the stereo itself is working?" Headphones, Or.......?
You COULD also TEST if the circuitry from the output amp is working by putting your EAR close up to the speakers to HEAR any noise background such as a faint HISS, HUM, or a THUMP as you turn the unit on and off or switch between functions. If you hear ANYTHING, that usually rules out a connection, or speaker problem, and indicates AT LEAST the output amp is probably working.
If you DO hear SOMETHING coming out of the speakers in the TEST above, try setting the unit to an AM radio station, and make sure any recording monitors are NOT selected, and listen. Also, try ALL the possible functions, e.g. CD, Radio AM, FM, etc. to see if only one function is kaput. (tech term)
If no results, so far, seems like you got a defective unit, so it's another 50 mile trek for you. Sorry.
If you DO have a lemon, consider this: Best Buy's price is listed at $156.99, onsale:

You might want to just RETURN it to Best Buy, and if your town has a Radio Shack, go there and get another, and at least the $6.00 will pay for your GAS. (You may want to test it right in the store, considering the 100 miles driving. I HATE it when such things happen!)
